Interpretation by Maurizio Gatti: The cells of this line have a quasi-diploid karyotype, which, however is difficult to interpret. Clearly, in all the cells examined there is an exchange between the third chromosomes, resulting in two chromosomes with unequal arms: one with an abnormally long arm and the other with an abnormally short arm. In addition, (i) one of two second chromosomes appears to have an abnormally short arm; (ii) one of the two putative X chromosomes does not display fluorescent chromatin at is short arm; (iii) all cells, in addition to a pair of fourth chromosomes, exhibit a mini-chromosome of uncertain origin. One interpretation of these observations is that the "X" lacking the fluorescent block is actually an autosomal arm, and that the mini-chromosome is one of the two elements of an X-2 translocation (bearing the fluorescent heterochromatic block of the X and the distal part of the second chromosome).
